3,000 People Visiting Des Moines for Dew Tour

DES MOINES -- The country's only Olympic qualifying skateboarding competition is underway in downtown Des Moines.

The Dew Tour starts at Lauridsen Skate Park runs thru Sunday. Tickets are sold out for the entire weekend.

"We've got 38 countries represented, so it's just incredible," said Greg Edwards with Catch Des Moines. "We have 300 athletes in town on skateboards, and they are all competing."

Edwards says around three thousand people are visiting Des Moines for the competition.

Skateboarding will make it's Olympic debut this summer in Tokyo.

The Dew Tour is the first event to be held at the newly opened, 88,000 square feet park in Des Moines. The skateboarders will be dealing with rain chances throughout the weekend. There's a chance for thunderstorms, but no severe weather is expected.

The Dew Tour says the competition features the world's top athletes competing for a chance to win the Dew Tour title and earn points toward their country's Olympic skateboarding team.

The event is historic for the U.S., Iowa, and Des Moines, and is expected to bring in between four and five Million dollars to the local economy.
