Rivera testifies in his murder case, changes story around Tibbetts death

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The final day of testimony in Cristhian Bahena Rivera's murder trial saw the defendant take the stand in his own defense.

Rivera is accused of 1st Degree Murder in the 2018 stabbing death of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts.

During questioning from his lawyer, Rivera changed his original story, implicating two unknown men.

"(There were) two people in my living room wearing sweaters and with their faces covered. The bigger one I could see had a gun, and the smaller one I could see had a knife," Rivera said.

He says he was forced by those men to drive his car to the area where they encountered Tibbetts.

"They said I shouldn't do anything stupid, and everything was going to be OK. One of them said to the other one something about someone running," Rivera said.

He says the men put something in the tru8nk of his car, which he later discovered was Tibbetts' body.

Rivers says he took it out and laid it in the cornfield where he directed police to find it weeks after the disappearance.

He initially told police that he fought with Tibbetts after seeing her jogging, that he blacked out and later found her body in the trunk of his car.

Closing arguments in the case are expected Thursday.
