New Census Data Breaks Down Population of Iowa Cities and Counties

United States 2020 census form

IOWA - New U.S. Census numbers show the growth and decline estimates of Iowa cities and counties.

The top five fastest growing cities in the last year are all in the Des Moines area - Waukee (8.4%), followed by Grimes (6.8%), Ankeny (4%) Norwalk (4%) and Johnston (2.2%).

Four Des Moines suburbs - Waukee, Ankeny, Johnston and West Des Moines - had the largest growth of cities with 20,000 or more people.

Waukee grew by 90% in the last 10 years. Ankeny, which is now rivaling West Des Moines for largest Des Moines suburb, grew by 54%.

Iowa City suburb Coralville was the fifth fastest growing city of 20,00 or more.

Another Iowa City suburb, North Liberty, grew by more than 5,000 residents, to nearly 20,000 (19,700)

The Iowa towns of Mason City, Fort Dodge, Burlington, and Waterloo all lost population (between 1,000-1,500 people) in the last decade.

The city of Des Moines has also lost 4% of its population during the last 4 years.

But the state's largest metro area overall is the growth center of the state.

Des Moines metro's Polk and Dallas counties together grew by more than the state as a whole, which means the rest of the state lost population in the last year.

The new data from the Census Bureau is an estimate of population. The official population numbers are scheduled to be released in August.
