DES MOINES, Iowa -- Play starts Friday in the PGA's Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in Des Moines.
The Champions Tour golf event comes back after a pandemic year off.
"It's really unbelievable how fast this has changed, and we're doing everything we can to make adjustments. Thirty or 35 days ago we weren't sure if we could have 5,000 fans out here, and what that would look like," says Tournament Director Doug Habgood.
He says they've been planning this year's tournament from the minute last year's event was canceled by the COVID-19.
Habgood says the tournament tees off with pandemic capacity limits in place.
"We'll allow up to 10,000 fans per day, and judging by the number of phone calls we're getting each and every minute here, I think we'll get really close to that number," he says.
Habgood also says the top golfers on the Champions Tour will play in the Principal Charity Classic.
"I'm not sure who's NOT in our field at this point--we went from having 28 of the top 30 players to having all of them here in Des Moines. I think it speak a lot to this community," he says.
The Principal Charity Classic runs Friday through Sunday.
