JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Bryan Burkhardt gets the most votes in a special Johnston City Council election.

The unofficial results from the Polk County Elections Office show voters overwhelmingly voted for Burkhardt over his competitor Adam Haar for the seat. Haar secured about 10% of the vote. Write-ins had more, with 38% of the vote.

On Facebook, Burkhardt writes -

"Thank you! Thank you to the voters. Thank you to my family. Thank you to the volunteers. Thank you to my opponent. Thank you to those who spread the word via social media or text messages or hand-written postcards or phone calls or personal conversations. Thank you to those who couldn’t vote but sent wishes from afar.
I am humbled by today’s election outcome. I look forward to serving ALL the residents of Johnston."

Burkhardt replaces John Temple in the at-large seat. Temple was temporarily appointed following Scott Syroka's departure to become the Deputy Director of Communications for the Biden Administration.
