(Clive, IA) -- Residents of Clive nearly got an unplanned fireworks show overnight. A large metal fireworks storage bin at 9350 NW Hickman caught fire. Crews from Clive and Urbandale arrived shortly after 12:30 a.m. and could tell some of the fireworks had ignited before they arrived, because part of the sides and roof had expanded.
Clive Fire Chief Rick Roe tells WHO Radio News they could hear fireworks exploding for about 90-minutes before they were able to spray water thru vents and douse the smoldering fireworks. He says the owner of the bin, Iowa Fireworks Company, said the bin was only about 20-percent full.
As a precaution Clive Police and the Polk County Sheriff's Office blocked off Hickman Road at 94th Street NW.
