Iowa's Unemployment Rate Up Slightly, Overall Economic Recovery Continues

(Iowa) -- Iowa's unemployment rate is up slightly, but the state is continuing its overall economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Iowa Workforce Development, the unemployment rate in the Des Moines area rose from 4.2% in May to 4.6% in June, but that number is still over 40% lower from this time last year. The Des Moines metro also saw job increases in the trade, transportation, and utilities industries, which had previously been losing jobs over the past several months.

The unemployment rate in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area rose from 4.9% in May to 5.5% in June. That's over 35% lower from this time in 2020.

Every county in Iowa is seeing a lower unemployment rate compared to this time last year.
