(Des Moines, IA) -- More parents in Iowa have applied to teach their kids driver's education at home. A bill had expanded a regulation earlier this month (July) for a parent-taught program which normally had applications from home-schooled families. State Driver Education Program Coordinator Steve Stonehocker tells the Iowa Capital Dispatch more than 580 applications have been filled out this month. Stonehocker says the average number of applications per month is about 45. He says the Department of Transportation is watching to see if the 900-percent increase in applications becomes permanent over time. Eight other states have similar bills.
