(Des Moines, IA) -- Work will begin soon on a new shelter for women and children on Des Moines's east side. Hope Ministries says the shelter will provide a safe place for people who need help. The organization now owns the former Douglas Elementary School building at 3800 East Douglas. The oldest part of the school, built in 1910, will be torn down. Hope Ministries will give away souvenir bricks Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
