(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa may play a part in helping Afghan refugees. Most of the thousands of refugees fleeing their country are coming to an east coast U.S. base but now Fort McCoy in Wisconsin and Fort Bliss in Texas will be taking in an unknown number of refugees. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds' office says it is exploring how it can continue to support Afghan SIV recipients who supported the U.S. Government. It also says it is waiting on additional details from the federal government to better understand the eventual processing and vetting process before resettlement. Most of the refugees fleeing Afghanistan are people who supported or worked for the U.S. government and are fleeing for fear of punishment after the Taliban has taken over the country.
