(Undated) -- The Iowa Poison Control Center is warning people against using Ivermectin to treat COVID-19. The medication, largely prescribed to treat livestock has been in the news recently as a possible off-label treatment for humans.

Tammy Noble of the Iowa Poison Control Center says they typically get calls each year about accidental exposure to the medication, but have not had any calls about people attempting to use it to treat coronavirus. She notes the reaction to human consumption of the medication can lead to serious side effects, including overdose and death.

She notes the medication is concentrated because it's given to large animals.

The FDA has not approved Ivermectin for use to treat COVID-19.
