(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines restaurant "Fat Tuesday" on SW 9th Street is closing on September 30th.

After serving the area for 12 years, restaurant business manager, Maria James, tells WHO 13 the failing health of her husband and restaurant owner, Steven James, plays into the decision.

"In 2016, he got colon cancer that metastasized to the liver, and now he's battling some other health issues related to that liver," said Maria, "So now he's up for a liver transplant, but he's not able to be at the place he loves, the place he built."

Maria says the spread of COVID-19 and a shortage of employees also lead to the decision to close the restaurant.
