(Des Moines, IA) -- The city of Des Moines is planning to promote proper recycling over the next few months, after increased reports of contaminated bins.

City leaders say recycling has economic benefits.

"Aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable, glass is easily recycled into a lot of new products," says Jonathan Gano, Director of Des Moines Public Works. "That lessens the amount of natural resources that need to be extracted to turn back into products that we buy on the shelves in stores."

About 130 people in Des Moines have lost their recycling privileges over the last year.
