Iowa State Patrol Releases Details of Crash that Killed Trooper Ted Benda

(Iowa) -- The Iowa state patrol is releasing new details about the single-car crash that killed Trooper Ted Benda in northeast Iowa on October 14th.

In a statement released Friday, the ISP says Benda was driving at high speeds responding to a call to assist Clayton County Sheriff's Deputies when he swerved to miss a deer and lost control of his patrol car.

According to the State Patrol, the car lost traction, veered into a ditch, and hit an embankment on the driver's side. The car then rolled several times.

Benda was airlifted a nearby hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries a few days later.

Benda's funeral was held on October 27th at Waukon High School.
