(Omaha, NE) -- Omaha police are investigating a mailbox explosion.

Early Sunday morning, a large brick mailbox exploded moments after security camera saw a dark red sedan slowly drove by the home near 180th Street and West Dodge Road.

The homeowner was able to smell the explosion moments after waking up to the explosion.

“There was a heavy sulfur smell,” he said. “And it was some sort of pipe bomb. Someone could have been walking a dog and had the device headed their way and it wouldn’t be a good outcome.”

The force of the explosion sent the front of the mailbox, two pounds of cast iron, into the neighbor's yard across the street.

Douglas County Sheriff investigators tell 6 News they are not aware of any cases similar to this one.
