(Des Moines, IA) -- Officials with the Des Moines International Airport say they're going to have to turn to suburban cities to help fund a new terminal. The $575-million terminal is scheduled to open in almost four years but so far, the airport is only halfway to its fundraising goal. This is why the idea of approaching the metro suburbs is taking on a new urgency. The city of Des Moines has already committed to $10-million and with the suburbs, the total metro contribution is estimated to top $34-million. Officials say the state of Iowa and the federal government will probably be able to fund the remaining balance. The project for a new terminal was announced in 2016. It might be used for international commercial flights which the airport says could help make the Des Moines metro more attractive to new business.
