(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Water Works is supporting a regional water utility. On Tuesday the board of trustees voted unanimously to start planning for Central Iowa Water Works, a utility that would be jointly run by Des Moines, West Des Moines, and Urbandale. Water utilities in West Des Moines and Urbandale plan to vote next month on joining the utility. The yes vote from Des Moines doesn't lock the city into an agreement, but instead means the issue will be strongly considered. If a plan is agreed upon it likely won't go into effect until 2023. Des Moines Water Works says the formation of Central Iowa Water Works will save customers money on their bills, but it's unclear exactly how much.
