Late Night Nebraska Emergency Alert Accidentally Transmitted

The Nebraska State Patrol Wednesday morning says they accidentally activated the Wireless Emergency Alert System to the public just after eleven Tuesday night, setting off smartphones with a loud audible alarm and generating the message: “Emergency Alert. The following is a test of the Emergency Alert System. This is a monthly test of the EAS.”

The message moved at 11:07 p.m., and usually goes as a test just to broadcasters, which leads to the familiar tones and computerized voice that come through radio and television stations during a test of the system.

The Patrol has apologized.
