(Fort Madison, IA) -- A correctional officer at the maximum security Iowa State Penitentiary was taken to the hospital Friday night after being assaulted by an inmate.
The department says the inmate approached the officer at his post and began beating him.
The officer was taken to the local hospital before going to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The inmate was not injured.
