(Undated) -- MidAmerican Energy is proposing a nearly 4-billion-dollar project to expand wind and solar energy in Iowa.
"Wind PRIME" is the name of the proposed project. Wind PRIME would provide energy to over 700,000 customers, while getting closer the MidAmerican's goal to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions.
The project would add 2,042 megawatts of wind generation and 50 megawatts of solar.
"We're hearing from our customers, 'We want more renewable energy'," Geoff Greenwood, MidAmerican Energy Spokesperson, tells Iowa News Now. "Here in Iowa, over the course of the year in 2021, 88% of the energy we supplied to our customers came from renewable sources. When we complete our wind prime project, which we hope the state will approve, that will take it up to 100%."
If the project is approved by the Iowa Utilities Board, MidAmerican aims to complete construction in 2024.
