Iowa had 114 tornados in 2021, the second-most for a single year.
Half of those, 63, occurred in December's Derecho and National Weather Service Meteorologist Rod Donavon says that's twice as many tornadoes as the previous record for a single event, which was 35 set back in 2014.
December 15th also set a record for most EF-2 or stronger tornadoes in a single day at 21. And EF-2 means tornadoes with wind speeds of 111 miles per hour or greater.
The year with the most tornados in Iowa was 2004, which saw 120 twisters.
