(Iowa) -- A bill requiring radon testing and mitigation in schools passes the Iowa Legislature.
The bill unanimously passed the Iowa Senate and now heads to Governor Kim Reynolds' desk. The bill makes testing for radon in Iowa schools mandatory and requires school districts to have radon mitigation plans. Radon is a toxic gas that can cause lung cancer in people who are exposed to high concentrations. The American Cancer Society is supporting the legislation.
The bill is named after Gail Orcutt, a retired teacher from Carroll, Iowa who contracted and eventually died from radon-induced lung cancer.
