(Des Moines, IA) -- It’s a big week for bills in the Iowa state legislature relating to education. The state Senate is passing a bill that would allocate some public education funding and convert it into vouchers for families switching their kids to private schools. The vouchers would be worth up to $10,000 per household. That bill is going to the state House for consideration. The House passed a bill earlier this week requiring teachers to make curriculum materials public for parents. School districts may be penalized up to $5,000 if a teacher doesn't list their materials properly. The bill now moves over to the State Senate. Lastly, a bill requiring radon testing in all public school buildings has passed both chambers and is going to the Governor’s desk. The radon testing bill is named after a former teacher who died from radon-related cancer, Gail Orcutt. This 2022 legislative session is scheduled to end April 19th.
