(Undated) -- Education leaders in Iowa say reading rates are down in the state.

Some say lacking foundational skills can cause ripple effects.

"This year, every building has had an extra staff member whose sole purpose is to help provide interventions and support for students who are struggling maybe with reading or with math," says Diane Schumacher, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for the Iowa City Community School District.

She says reading rates are rising, but are still below where they were before the pandemic.
