(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- The Cedar Rapids City Council is approving funds for a new affordable housing project.

The city will build up to 25 residential units on a vacant property in Wellington Heights with the money. The one-point-four-million-dollars for the project is being allocated from federal funding. The new housing units will be built on the former Colonial Centre on Second Avenue Southeast.

The property will be given from the city to a nonprofit to own and operate after building is complete.
