Weekend Nebraska Wildfire Turns Deadly

A retired Southwest Nebraska fire chief dies and about a dozen people are hurt after wildfires in South Central and Southwest Nebraska over the weekend.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency confirms 66-year-old John Trumble was helping firefighters as a spotter in his car when he was overcome by smoke.

Governor Pete Ricketts has activated more than 30 members of the Army and Air National Guard to help fight the fires from both ground and air.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is approving the state request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant, and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says it has activated the State Emergency Operations Center to help manage the firefighting effort.

Firefighters have also had to deal with a wildfire in Burt County in Northeast Nebraska.
