UPDATE: Michael Lang Found Guilty of Murder

(Webster City, Iowa) -- The verdict is in in the trial of Michael Lang.

The jury found Lang guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assaulting a peace officer in the shooting death of Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith during a standoff in Grundy Center in April of last year. Closing arguments ended Monday afternoon, and the jury did not take long to arrive at the verdict. Lang will be held without bail pending sentencing.

A first degree murder conviction in Iowa carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
