Man Fatally Shot by Davenport Police During Confrontation Identified

(Davenport, Iowa) -- The Scott County Deputies Office is identifying the man shot an killed by an officer Wednesday morning.

A media release says Davenport Police responded to reports of a man tampering with an air conditioning unit at a Casey's Store on West 53rd Street a little before 1a.m. Wednesday morning.

Police say the suspect was identified as 45 year-old Jason James Morales, who had outstanding warrants. Police say the officer on the scene talked to Morales, who initiated a physical confrontation, which eventually leaded to shots being fired between Morales and the officer. Morales was critically shot during the exchange and later died an an area hospital. The officer sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The officer is on administrative leave, pending a further investigation into the shooting.
