(Polk Co., IA) -- A total of thirty-two air conditioned cooling centers are available in Polk County across thirteen different communities for residents on extremely hot days such as today. Eighteen public cooling centers are open for free in the city of Des Moines; including the Central Library, Eastside Community Center, Forest Avenue Library, and the Wellmark YMCA. Other public buildings are available to anyone needing to cool down in Ankeny, Altoona, Clive, Bondurant, Elkhart, Johnston, Urbandale, Mitchellville, Polk City, Pleasant Hill, and West Des Moines. DART is also offering free bus rides to and from the facilities, riders must tell DART drivers they are going to or leaving a cooling center for the free passage. Get cooling center information HERE
