(Ankeny, IA) -- An Ankeny moped theft turned into something a little more serious today (Wednesday). An officer on a bike patrol spotted a suspect with a stolen moped on a bike trail. The moped had been reported stolen from an address on NW Pine Road this morning.

The officer told the man, later identified as 45-year-old Thomas Montgomery, to stop but Montgomery dropped the moped and started running. The officer chased him on foot but at the end of the chase, police say Montgomery took a fighting stance and a Taser was used.

Police say Montgomery continued to resist arrest and a Taser was used a second time. Police say they found illegal drugs in the guy's backpack.

The Ankeny Fire Department responded to the scene and checked Montgomery’s well-being and removed the taser probes. Once he was medically cleared he was told he was under arrest and transported to the Polk Co. Jail.

Montgomery is facing the following charges:

Theft 3rd – Iowa Code 714.2 (3) – Aggravated misdemeanor

Possession with Intent to Deliver – Iowa Code 124.401 (1)(D) – Class D felony

Failure to affix Drug Tax Stamp – Iowa Code 453B.12 – Class D Felony

Interference with Official Acts – Iowa Code 719.1 (1)(B) – Simple misdemeanor

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Iowa Code 124.414 – Simple misdemeanor

Montgomery was also wanted on 3 arrest warrants from other agencies. Those charges are Lascivious Acts with a Child and 2 counts of Theft 3rd.
