(Iowa) -- Tuesday night's storms are being classified as a derecho.
The National Weather Service says a derecho is a system over 400 miles long producing winds over 58 miles and hour with frequent gusts over 75 miles an hour. Tuesday's storms stretched 595 miles through South Dakota, northeastern Nebraska, into central and eastern Iowa. Several cities in Iowa report strong winds including:
- 70mph in Cedar Rapids
- 70mph in Hiawatha
- 70mph in Independence
- 60mph in Marion
- 60mph in Oelwein
- 55mph in Washington
The National Weather Service says it's not uncommon to see derechos in the Midwest this time of year. Derechos are typically seen in late June through August.
