Omaha Charter Convention Completes Work

The current Omaha Charter Convention approves a revised proposed amendment to the Omaha Home Rule Charter of 1954 dealing with who is in power when the Mayor is out of town.

The amendment proposes allowing the Mayor to stay in power while out of town for up to five days before an acting chief executive would need to be put in place.

Pointing to current communications technology, Mayor Jean Stothert originally proposed allowing the Mayor to stay in power while out of town for up to ten days.

The amendment now heads to the City Council and if it passes will be on the ballot in November.

That amendment proposal is one of 24 made by the Charter Convention to the City Council;

The charter requires a citizen review roughly every ten years.
