(Iowa) -- A mobile museum from the State Historical Society is making its way to all 99 Iowa counties.

The museum features a new exhibit with artifacts from throughout the state's history. Some items included in the new exhibit include:

  • Knitting needles from then Iowa First Lady Jane Kirkwood used to knit clothing for soldiers during the Civil War and World War I
  • Items from the Meskwaki tribe and other indigenous peoples
  • A flight suit worn in space by astronaut and Iowa native Peggy Whitson
  • Boots worn by Des Moines Water Works Director L.D. McMullen during the 1993 flood

The mobile museum, a custom-made Winnebago, made its first three-year trip across the state from 2017-2019, and a new trip across the state began in May and will last through 2023. The museum is free and open to the public.

You can find the museum's schedule and request a visit in your community at the State Historical Society's website.
