AMES, Iowa -- Tuition is going up at Iowa's Regents universities.
During its meeting in Ames on Wednesday, the Board of Regents gave final approval to a 4.25 percent increase at the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa for the 2022-23 academic year that starts next month.
The move comes after the Iowa Legislature approved a $5.5 million state funding increase earlier this year--just over a percent more than the previous year, and much less than the $15 million the Regents schools asked for.
University leaders say the tuition hike is now necessary, as the state funding increase won't keep up with rising inflation costs.
Under the new rates, tuition at the University of Iowa's going up $355 to $8,711, Iowa State's going up $345 to $8,678, and Northern Iowa's going up $331 to $8,111.
