(Des Moines, IA) -- Members of the local steelworkers union in Des Moines are back at work at Bridgestone-Firestone this morning after reaching an contract agreement just before midnight.
The contract between members of United Steelworkers Post 310 and Bridgestone-Firestone ran out at 11:00 pm Thursday night. They had been negotiating for months with the company. Workers say they were prepared to strike, but 36 minutes after the contract ran out, a deal was reached.
Union members will have several informational meetings to review the contract before they vote on the deal. The date for that vote is not set yet, but they believe it will be next week. The leaders of the union were in Kentucky for negotiations and will need to travel back to Des Moines.
