Autopsies From Maquoketa Caves State Park Killings Confirm Homicide

(Maquoketa, IA) -- Autopsies from the triple-murder at Maquoketa Caves State Park confirm the three family members from Cedar Falls were the victims of a homicide. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says its investigation shows 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt died from a gunshot wound and multiple stab injuries. DCI says 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt was stabbed to death and six-year-old Lula Schmidt died from a gunshot wound and strangulation. DCI says the autopsies confirm the three were murdered by 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of La Vista, Nebraska on July 22nd. The department says Sherwin then killed himself after committing the murders.
