(Ames, IA) -- Iowa State University's Insect Zoo is hosting an open house Saturday for kids of all ages. Education Program Coordinator Ginny Mitchell says they're planning numerous activities including cockroach racing and painting with maggots. She says in addition there will be displays about honey bees and other pollinators, a field day in which participants can go bug collecting and then learn more about the scientific side of entomology.

Organizers are also planning a bug collection event Saturday night at Carr Park (Meadowlane Ave & Carr Drive) from 6-10 p.m. Mitchell says they plan to hang up a white sheet and black-lights and see how many bugs become attracted to it.

The open house (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and the night time event (6-10 p.m.) are free. The field day event costs $15 and requires pre-registration. The cost includes an insect pinning kit. To register email: www.clcunn@iastate.edu

The open house will take place at the ATRB Building on the ISU Campus (2213 Pammel Drive).
