(Omaha, NE) -- Sarpy County residents with used or scrap tires laying around can discard them for free on Friday, September 9th.

"We'll be accepting used tires, scrapped tires, from 8 am to 3 pm. People can drop them off at no cost. It's free to the public," says Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District General Manager John Winkler. "There is minimal unloading help available. If you get there, you might get help or you might not, so plan on unloading the tires yourself."

The Free Scrap Tire Collection is being held at the Sarpy County Fairground in Springfield, Nebraska. Winkler expects a large turnout. He says the last tire collection held in the county was in 2017.

"We've had a lot of people call, expressing interest in information and things like that. We've planned for up to 650 tons. I don't know if we'll get that many. That's a pretty large event for just one county collection, but we've got the capacity," says Winkler.

The Free Scrap Tire Collection is being funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. Carrying out the event is a partnership between Papio NRD, Sarpy County, and the Sarpy County Fair Board. The trio notes the following important details for those looking to take part in the collection:

  • Sarpy County residents must bring a driver’s license or most recent utility bill for proof of residence
  • There is no limit on the number of tires residents can bring to the collection
  • Residents are asked to have a tire count at the time of check-in
  • Rims or tubes are not allowed
  • Unloading of tires will not be provided
  • Dealers or resellers are not allowed

"We'd like to keep the used tires out of our county right-of-way road ditches. We'd like to keep them out of our rivers and streams," says Winkler. "It's a good event. Take advantage of it. We hope a lot of people do, so we get a lot of these used tires out of people's garages and people's farms."

Residents are asked to enter the Sarpy County Fairgrounds from Main Street and Railroad, exiting the fairgrounds at South Gate and Pflug Road. More information can be found here, or by contacting Papio NRD at (402) 444-6222.
