Huskers To Go Back In Time

Nebraska breaks out alternate uniforms for Saturday evening's game against Georgia Southern.

The alternates are a throwback and tribute to Nebraska's vaunted 1983 "Scoring Explosion" team with a design similar to that era of Husker football, though modern uniforms feature much shorter sleeves to hold the early '80's "N" emblem.

The 1983 team was undefeated in the regular season and finished No. 2 in the national polls with a 12-1 record after losing an epic game to Miami in the Orange Bowl on the Hurricanes home field.

Despite the bitter result that night for Big Red Nation, that game on January 2nd, 1984 is considered one of college football's greatest ever.

That season, the Huskers led the nation in rushing and scoring offense, averaging 401.7 rushing yards and 52.0 points per game, respectively.

The current Nebraska staff will also wear the coaches sideline attire and hats that were en vogue in the '80's.

Branding the 1983 Huskers the "Scoring Explosion" came from a NU Athletics Communications office run by legendary Sports Information Director Don Bryant and led to a memorable schedule poster featuring the Memorial Stadium scoreboard, flying footballs, and Husker stars Turner Gill, Irving Fryar, Mike Rozier, and Mark Schellen.

Rozier would win the Heisman Trophy and Fryar was the first overall pick in the 1984 NFL Draft.
