(Des Moines, IA) -- The State of Iowa is one of six states to join a multi-state lawsuit challenging President Biden's student loan forgiveness.
The challenge is filed in federal court in Missouri, asking for an immediate temporary restraining order pausing the plan. The states claim that in addition to being unfair and economically unwise, they argue the Biden Loan Forgiveness plan is an unlawful regulatory action.
Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds wanted to join the lawsuit, Democratic State Attorney General Tom Miller did not. Miller released the following statement:
"The governor has a statutory right to join these lawsuits, and our office has the responsibility to assist her in doing so. Had the not made this request, our office would not have the this lawsuit in any way. As a policy matter, I believe student loan debt forgiveness will provide much needed relief to thousands of Iowans who have felt the enormous crush of student debt."
Miller did not sign the suit; the Assistant Solicitor signed for Iowa. Both Governor Reynolds and Attorney General Miller are up for re-election this fall.
