Now that "Google Fiber" has approval from the Omaha City Council to put in fiber optic cable for broadband internet, it's expected to take four or five years to build the network.
Construction could begin somewhere in central Omaha;
Rachel Merlo, the "Google Fiber" Government and Community Affairs Manager, tells the City Council the company will work with residents as they carry out installation.
Under Nebraska law, the company will not pay a 2-percent franchise fee to dig on the city's right-of-way because it is internet only, no TV.
That has the city talking about lobbying for a new state law in order to receive a share of profits, a proposal also supported by "Cox Communications," which is concerned about a level playing field of competition.
