DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Republican challenger in Iowa's State Auditor race wants a statewide recount of votes.

Todd Halbur says he's asking for the recount after what he calls errors in the vote count.

"Over the course of days we have seen human errors, technical errors, process errors, and maybe even some blatant egregious errors that have happened to our votes across this state. Therefore I will ask for a recount of the State Auditor's race," Halbur says.

Des Moines and Warren counties did administrative recounts Wednesday and Thursday after both found uncounted votes after Tuesday's election.

"We will follow the process of the recount according to the rule of law outlined, and then after this recount I believe myself and the voters of Iowa will feel confident in these new verified results," Halbur says.

As it stands now, incumbent Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand leads in the race by just over 2,600 votes.

Sand declared victory Thursday after the final statewide vote totals were released.

If Sand is ultimately declared the winner, he'll be the only Democratic incumbent state office holder to win reelection in 2022.

Attorney General Tom Miller and State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald were defeated by Republican challengers in Tuesday's election.

Miller and Fitzgerald were the nation's longest serving elected officials in their roles.
