Johnston Man Faces Animal Neglect Charges

(Johnston, IA) -- A Johnston man faces animal neglect charges after police say he abandoned 20 cats at an apartment.

They say Melvin Carr moved out of the apartment in October and left the kittens and cats behind.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa assisted police with the rescue, saying the apartment was full of trash, feces, and cockroaches.

The A-R-L says one kitten died, and four others are sick or injured.

Carr was booked into the Polk County Jail Sunday. His arraignment is scheduled for early next year.
