Arrest made in 2015 Omaha cold case murders

(Omaha, NE) -- A man is charged in connection to two 2015 cold case murders in Omaha.

On Wednesday, Omaha Police announced that 35 year old Cavin Cooper has been charged with two counts of 1st-degree murder, two counts of use of a gun to commit a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person for the 2015 murders of Diondre Mitchell and Lafayette Reed.

Police say around 4:30 the morning of May 5, 2015, officers were called to a home near 28th and Lothrop to investigate a shooting. Once on the scene, officers found two men, Mitchell and Reed, in the kitchen of the home, unresponsive. Both victims were declared dead at the scene. The men were attending a gathering at the house when they were shot and killed.

Cooper is currently incarcerated for 1st-degree assault, weapons charges and habitual criminal charges related to a 2018 crime.
