Omaha Police solving homicides at higher rate than national average

(Omaha, NE) -- The Omaha Police Department is solving homicides at a higher rate than the national average.

OPD says thanks to the collaborative work of their Homicide Unit and the Omaha community, the department achieved a homicide clearance rate well above the national average for the 10th straight year in 2022. Omaha Police say in the past 10 years, investigators have solved 80 percent of the homicides OPD has investigated. OPD says that is almost 30 percent higher than the clearance rate of similar sized cities. OPD ended 2022 with an 87 percent homicide clearance rate.

Omaha Police say this clearance rate can be, "Attributed to the tireless efforts of investigators in our Homicide Unit to bring justice to the families of victims, and peace of mind to the citizens of Omaha. In addition, citizens willing to provide information about homicides has been crucial in solving many cases." Omaha Crime Stoppers offers enhanced rewards for tips leading to arrests in homicides and other violent crimes. OPD says, "In many cases, a Crime Stoppers tip has been the final piece of information needed to make an arrest in these cases."

Omaha has also maintained a homicide rate per capita well below the national average for over a decade.
