(Linclon, NE) -- The Nebraska Legislature is considering a bill that would mandate a minimal train crew size. Legislative Bill 31 requires freight trains to maintain crews of two or more unless traveling under ten miles an hour or during the process of loading and unloading. Fines for individuals violating the potential new law range from $250 up to $10,000. Union Pacific, with headquarters in Omaha, is opposed to the bill, saying it threatens the collective bargaining process.
