National Survey Ranks Iowa 5th Best State for First-Time Home Buyers

(Iowa) -- A new 50 state survey ranks Iowa among the top five best states for first-time home buyers.

Personal finance website Moneywise ranks Iowa as the fifth best state in the country for people looking to buy their first home. The survey looked at the median home price according to Zillow and the 13% average down payment according to the National Association of Realtors. The survey finds the average home price in Iowa is $183,418, with the average down payment totaling $23,844.

Moneywise says the top five states for first-time home buyers include:

  • West Virginia
  • Mississippi
  • Arkansas
  • Oklahoma
  • Iowa

The five states at the bottom of the list include:

  • Hawaii
  • California
  • Washington
  • Colorado
  • Massachusetts
