(Des Moines, IA) -- Cold weather didn't stop Des Moines metro residents from celebrating Record Store Day on Saturday, April 22.
ZZZ Records in Des Moines has participated in Record Store Day for the last 16 years. Owner Nate Niceswanger says the demographic continues to evolve.
"You would think that record buyers would be older, but there's definitely a lot of younger people coming out," he said. "It used to be a very male-dominated hobby, now we see it's getting closer to 50-50."
Niceswanger told WHO Radio News that Saturday's strong turnout was a pleasant surprise.
"I was worried that with the subpar weather we might not have a great crowd, but it's been very strong and very steady all day," he said.
Record Store Day began in 2008 to celebrate independently-owned record stores.
Vinyl records have outsold CDs in the U.S. since 2021, according to a report from the Recording Industry Association of America.
