As a precaution, a school resource officer, Omaha Police, and building administrators had Omaha Westside High School in a "SECURE" mode midmorning Thursday.
The extra security was because of a discussion that was overheard off school grounds, and the 'lockout' was eventually lifted.
The Principal then sent out this message:
Dear WHS Students and Families,
Earlier this morning, one of our employees notified our security staff after overhearing a conversation between students off campus that raised concern. Out of an abundance of caution, school leadership placed our building into SECURE mode while our School Resource Officer contacted Omaha Police, investigated and searched the students and vehicle. As a reminder, SECURE means doors are locked, and no one is allowed to enter or exit the building for a short period of time.
No weapon was discovered. Within minutes, the SECURE was lifted and all schedules/procedures resumed as normal. Omaha Police will now handle any additional investigation and/or questions.
We commend this staff member for immediately reaching out to building leadership and Officer Kilgore when they had concerns. We are also thankful for all of our staff members and students for following all of our safety protocols just as we have practiced. As a reminder, our Safe2Help hotline is always available to report any concerns. (anonymously and 24/7) at 402-390-2118.
