Northeast Nebraska teen dies after collapsing during track practice

(Wisner, NE) -- A northeast Nebraska high school senior dies after collapsing during track practice.

Wisner-Pilger Schools multi-sport athlete, 18 year old Hunter Palmer collapsed during practice last Friday. Palmer later died at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point. He was not only a track star, competing in two events at a Norfolk Catholic meet the day before his death, he also played basketball and was an all-district running back in football. Palmer had signed with Midland University in Fremont to play football.

Midland football head coach Jeff Jamrog released the following statement on Twitter: “Heaven gained a great young man. Our hearts are heavy and we are all suffering with the pain of the loss of Hunter Palmer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Palmer family, friends and the Wisner-Pilger community. Our staff really enjoyed recruiting Hunter. He was a dynamic young man who was an absolute pleasure to be around. Hunter was someone so special and will never be forgotten. Hunter is gone way too soon. May you rest in eternal peace Hunter. We miss you already.”

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 Wednesday evening at the Wisner City Auditorium. Visitation starts at 4:00 Wednesday afternoon. A private family interment will be held at the Wisner Cemetery.
